Often, we tend to perceive people as weither filigrane and sensitive or robust and strong. We tend to think that sensibility is a weakness and toughness is a sign of strength. What if that would be the opposite? What if the fragile one has the strength in itself to carry the most robust one? What if a person can be a symbiosis of robustness and gentleness all together in one? All these philosophical thoughts came to me the first time I saw the Willmann vase. Is it not so that, a good design product can trigger philosophical thoughts? After talking to Hanne Willmann, the designer of this vase, I can answer all my questions with „Yes“.
Hanne likes it when products surprise you at first glance. The Willmann vase is originally based on a technological application: „ I wanted to pour a glass with a thread directly during the hardening process of the concrete, in order to be able to turn it out again and get a shutter sealing. Then came the design part. The idea of the thread has unfortunately not survived, but less complicated solution: the concrete part is simply put on top of it. My first prototype also had the same proportions as the now finished vase for Menu; Only the color of the concrete changed a little. „ – says Hanne

Offen tendieren wir dazu, einen Mensch entweder als filigran und sensible oder robust und stark wahrzunehmen. Man tendiert zu denken, dass Sensibilität eine Schwäche sei und eine Unzerbrechlichkeit eine Stärke. Was wenn es umgekehrt wäre? Was wenn das Zerbrechliche die Kraft in sich hat das Robuste zu tragen? Was, wenn ein Mensch eine Symbiose von hart und filigran zusammen sein kann? All diese philosophischen Gedanken kamen zu mir als ich das erste Mal die Willmann Vase sah. Ist ein gutes Designprodukt nicht ein Auslöser für philosophische Gedanken? Nachdem ich im Hanne Willmann Interview, mit der Designerin der Vase gesprochen habe, kann ich alle meine Fragen mit „Ja“ beantworten.
Hanne mag es, wenn Produkte einen auf den ersten Blick überraschen. Die Willmann Vase ist ursprünglich auf einem technologischen Einsatz basiert: „Ich wollte ein Glas mit Gewinde direkt beim Aushärten des Betons mit eingießen, um es danach wieder rausdrehen zu können und so einen Verschluss zu bekommen. Der Rest war Gestaltung. Die Idee vom Gewinde hat leider nicht überlebt, aber nach 2 Wochen stand der Prototyp mit viel unkomplizierterer Lösung: der Betonteil wird einfach draufgesteckt. „ – sagt Hanne
